Veteran Nigerian musician, writer, sculptor and university lecturer, Professor Sir Victor Uwaifo is dead.

The sculptor, writer and musical instrument inventor, Victor Uwaifo died at the Stella Obasanjo Hospital in Benin, Daily Dates Nigeria reports.


Sir Victor Uwaifo is the winner of the first gold disc in Africa with his popular song Joromi which was released in 1965. This was followed with other gold disc in Guitar boy, Arabade, Ekassa series and Akwete music. He recorded under the stage name Victor Uwaifo and His Titibitis.

His Genre of music was Highlife and has been active in the music scene since the 1960s.

He was 80 years old.
