Residents of Sauka Extension, Lugbe, were left reeling in shock and pain after officials of the Federal Housing Authority (FHA) and staff of NUGA Best International, accompanied by Nigerian Police officers, demolished houses in the community on Saturday afternoon.
Eyewitnesses recounted the chaotic scene, with people being rendered homeless and some beaten by police. Tear gas was allegedly used to intimidate residents, forcing them to vacate their homes.
The demolition is linked to the Federal Housing Authority Golden Jubilee Estate project, a 200-hectare development initiative. However, residents claim that the court has yet to determine the status of land allocation and ownership.
Despite the ongoing legal dispute, NUGA Best, backed by the FHA, has commenced demolition, leaving residents outraged and concerned about their rights.
This incident raises concerns about the protection of citizens’ rights and the role of government agencies in land disputes.
